kere: Kannada for lake

Doddakannelli Kere has turned green. Let's bring it back.

Our 18.6-acre lake off Sarjapur Road is covered in algae, and waste is piling up on its banks. On 31 October 2026, residents walked the lake and recorded what they saw. Here is the evidence, what we are asking the city to do, and how you can help.

The evidence

What we found

Residents walked the lake on the morning of 31 October 2026. We recorded 11 photos and 10 videos, all geotagged. Five problems stood out. Their numbers match the map below. Tap any photo to see it larger.

Water flowing in at the north-east inlet

Water is entering the lake over the weir at the north-east inlet channel. This is the most likely source of the nutrients that feed the algae. Cleaning alone won't last while this inflow continues.

A thick algal mat across the water

A thick green mat of algae covers the east arm and much of the main water body. In the east arm, we saw a circular up-welling breaking the surface. It may be a submerged outfall.

Plastic, sludge and litter on the banks

Plastic is trapped against the culvert under the walkway, and more has collected along the stone pitching on the west shore. On the north shore there is sludge, with bottles, sacks and a crate at the water's edge.

Idol remains in the kalyani

The kalyani is the stepped tank by the lake, used for idol immersions. After the festival immersions it still holds broken idol remains and floating waste.

Two open garbage dumps on the walkway

One dump is beside the kalyani fence. The other is a long strip along the north path, inside the fence, and part of it has been burnt.

Where

Where the problems are

Each point is placed from the GPS tags on our photos, to scale and with north up. We have not drawn the lake's outline. Open Google Maps to see the lake itself.

The kalyani and the east arm are 140 to 170 metres south of them. The main water body point is about 360 metres west of the inlet, and the west shore point is at the bottom left. How it happens

Why the lake turns green

Algae need food. Sewage, raw or treated, gives them plenty.

  1. Sewage flows in

Raw or treated sewage enters the water.

  2. It brings nutrients

    Sewage carries nitrogen and phosphorus.

  3. Algae bloom

The nutrients feed algae, which spread across the surface.

  4. Oxygen swings

Algae push oxygen levels up and down. That can kill fish.

Toxic blooms

Some blooms are cyanobacteria, also called blue-green algae. They can produce toxins harmful to fish, birds, pets and people.

What fixes it
  • Stop sewage and solid waste getting in. This comes first.
  • Remove nutrients from the water.
  • Build constructed wetlands.
  • Remove weeds early, before they spread.
  • Monitor the water regularly.

Cleaning alone won't last unless the inflow stops.

Our requests

What we're asking for

Five requests to the agencies responsible for the lake. We want to work with them to fix the cause, not only the symptoms.

  1. Find and fix the inflow

BWSSB and the corporation trace where the north-east inlet's water comes from, then divert or treat it, with a date for the work.

  2. Clean the water and the kalyani

The corporation removes the algae, weeds and floating litter, and cleans the kalyani.

  3. Clear the dumps and keep them clear

Both dump spots are cleared. Re-dumping is stopped with signboards, CCTV or a marshal, and penalties.

  4. Be open about maintenance

Tell residents who the lake's maintenance contractor is and what the contract covers.

  5. Walk the lake with us

A joint site inspection by officials and residents.

For the longer term
  • A registered lake groupResidents organised as a registered group, working with the corporation.
  • Monthly lake walksRegular walks to spot problems early and report them.
  • Mobile immersion tanksSet up at festival time for idol immersions.
The journey

Where we are now

We are doing this in the open. Every step we take, and every reply we get from the agencies, goes on this page with a date. Four phases take us from putting the problem on record to keeping the lake clean for good.

Doddakannelli Kere, our lake off Sarjapur Road in Bellandur, has turned green with algae, and garbage is being dumped on its banks. Residents are asking BWSSB and Bengaluru East City Corporation to stop the inflow and clean it up. See the evidence and how you can help.

        Who we are

        Neighbours of the lake

We are residents living around Doddakannelli Kere, on Doddakannelli–Bellandur Road and in the neighbouring societies.

We want to work with the agencies responsible for the lake: Bengaluru East City Corporation, BWSSB and KSPCB. Our aim is a clean lake that stays clean, with residents helping to look after it.
